Band and choir practice everyday during first period. Band and choir do not practice at the same time, normally. There are two different teachers for each class. Mr. Blackman teaches choir and Mrs. Powell teaches band.
Band: In the Fall we focus on Marching Band. We participate in the Yorkfest Parade and Harvest of Harmony Parade in Grand Island. The Fall Concert is the marching music with the Flag Team performing. We then begin preparing for the Winter Concert which is in December. January and February are big months for Pep Band music. The Pep Band performs for the fall and winter sports teams but we have more time to focus on that music after Christmas break. Spring is when we are preparing for District Music. Spring Concert in May, we perform contest selections (large and small groups) and we end the year performing at Graduation. We jump into the new year right away in June when we prepare to march at the Swedish Festival Parade.
Choir: The kids in choir spend a half hour every day working on music for the numerous performances we have throughout the year. We sing a very wide variety of music, anywhere from choral melody to rhythmic speech, from classical to pop and country. As a group, they sing at the 3 community concerts, graduation, and District Music for competition. Individually, they can audition for and sing in over 6 honor choirs per year, notably being the CRC Honor Choir. We also learn and perform solo and small ensemble music for District Music Contest for competition. For the final concert we sing much more pop and/or country and use this as an opportunity to showcase the talent we have. Last but not least, every year we take a trip in to Omaha to see whatever show the Orpheum has to offer for that year. In the past, we saw Blue Man Group and Phantom of the Opera.
